When I started this blog I made a personal goal of one post per week for three months.  Up until this week (week four) there was no problem.  This week I wrote or revised three different pieces as possibilities.  Each one was honest and meaningful.  Each one involved other people.  One by one they became ineligible for publication.

The first story was a depiction of a conversation I had with a friend I admire very much.  She has been like a fairy godmother to me with her parenting insight and soft yet colorful wisdom.  A poignant section of the piece contained information about her troubled childhood.  When  I asked for permission to share her story she said No, I would be uncomfortable.  I respect this woman very much so the conversation will rest in my memory and continue to inspire me alone.  I will tell you that the prevailing message is that we all have to do what we enjoy in order to give to others.

A  second write-up I considered for this week needed the permission of a former writing classmate.  I wanted to share a funny, light scene she described in her writing.  It would only be a small portion of the piece I want to create but it’s such a beautiful image I would hate to leave it out.  My request is still pending.  The lovely young classmate is gallivanting around the world and probably not checking her emails regularly. Her free spirit is what I love about her, so I’ll wait.

Lastly, I wrote down in great detail a story about an event in our neighborhood.  It deals with image consciousness and beauty. I feel that the writing is good and the message is worthwhile but again the lives and egos of others are put on the page.

Unfortunately, it seems the strongest, most intriguing writing involves vulnerability and human flaws as well as courage and beauty.

I knew writing my own memoir could affect family members and friends but I didn’t realize how careful I would have to be with my general writing.  I feel I write best when I am close to the subject matter, when it’s personal and when it’s the truth.  I learned this week that there will be roadblocks.  I now see the accuracy of the old adage If you want to write the truth you have to write fiction.
