Hello Gentle Readers,

How do you keep focused on what’s most important to you when you’re stressed and overwhelmed by the noise, chaos, and busyness of life?

I don’t know about you, but it’s always been a challenge for me…and it’s not getting any easier.

We face increasing distractions in our lives; things that constantly seek to pull us away from what’s important to us. If we’re not intentional about it, and if we aren’t aware of what matters to us in the first place we find ourselves watching the days whizz overworked and overwhelmed.

I have been speaking to my friend, Andy Mort about this issue. As someone who leads an online community for introverted and highly sensitive creative people he said it is a struggle that comes up for many of his readers. He asked me if I had any advice on how to help people keep focused on their own priorities without getting distracted and overwhelmed.

Andy invited me to share my thoughts for a free e-book he has put together. His vision was to bring a wider range of voices and perspectives than his own. He has brought friends from different fields and walks of life to help give a broader sense of what’s possible. So I was happy to be able to add my thoughts to this important conversation, with the hope that it might inspire and encourage people as they grapple with the reality of overwhelm and busyness in their own day to day lives.

Andy asked me to respond to three questions:

1. How do you remain focused on what’s most important to you during those moments when you feel stressed and overwhelmed by the noise, chaos, and busyness of life?

2. Where is your own ‘happy place’ (favorite place to withdraw) to re-energize and spend time re-charging before facing the world again?

3. What one thing might you suggest to someone who gets easily distracted and overwhelmed and feels like they are in a constant battle moving one step forwards and two steps back when it comes to pursuing the stuff that truly matters to them?

It was an interesting exercise for me personally because it got me thinking about this topic and how I keep on track with what matters to me. There are more than 20 other voices that Andy asked to contribute responses to the e-book and it’s been really fascinating to see the variety of approaches people take.

What you will see is that there really isn’t one size fits all, but I can guarantee that if this is something you struggle with yourself there will be some huge pearls of wisdom in the book that will help you regain the focus and clarity you seek.

You may not consider it a particular struggle for you personally. I would still heartily recommend you get hold of the book just so you can soak in the broad range of perspectives from fellow ‘Gentle Rebels’. It’s sometimes easy to forget that not everyone interacts with the world in the same way as you and there is always more to learn.
