It is a perfect smoke to end the day's demands or to stir up a boring afternoon. While this tobacco is a little stout for my taste at this point, I did find t hat it has a great taste and aroma. The smoky flavour is nice and develops a slightly salty, mineral taste. If this has 75% latakia, I guess I could smoke pure latakia. Smooth and creamy smoke. For making the best smoke I have ever had thus far!! The smokey latakia is up front (though I wouldn't consider it a lat bomb), and floral riding shot gun and mildly sweet in the back. And the bricks were pretty cool, I must say. This is what is left in my mouth while smoking this blend, an odd cooling sensation not unpleasant in any regards, just unexpected and strange. Peterson Savinelli Rossi. This stuff lives up to its reputation as Latakia Central. This blend is a Latakia lovers dream in the scene that IT IS A LAT BOMB and i like it. Apparently it was just too soon into my foray into pipe smoking, but when I tried it I was astounded at how dirty it tasted. Say no more, but something that seems really important, this mixture has smoke very slowly, leaving cool as possible, but it is not difficult to smoke. Tastes like Karo Syrup and Latikia. My Favorite Latakia forward blend, not for the smoker who only likes a touch of latakia, it has enough Burley and Virginias to keep it interesting, but the Latakia will take over. Dispite being mostly latakia it's actually not quite the punch in the mouth you'd think it would be. I don't even jar this stuff, just keep it in the container. With a total of almost 9 years of age on my batch, the Latakia really tones down into something similar to Syrian Latakia. I recommend a small bowl with a longish stem for best smoke. Pairs up well with Islay scotches. It came at a time of several samples and got stashed away and, well, forgotten about. . nothing subtle here, but very smooth. The power/intensity of the smoke is impressive as one might expect from such a Latakia-forward blend. This leaves my mouth feeling bitten for a day or two afterwards. McClelland's Syrian Full Balkan with it's Syrian Latakia presents a different experience with it's heavy Latakia yielding a very cool smoke - so cool one could think the blend is topped with menthol. Second the name is brilliance. This stuff produces huge, thick clouds of smoke which never dissipate. I feel like I'm the naysayer here, I read sooo many positive things about this blend. The tin I bought had perfect moisture and didn't need to let it sit out prior to loading up a bowl. I enjoyed it because of that. Still one star off for not having any other notes that I can discern. I appreciate GLP Maltese Falcon and Odissey, that I find more enjoyable and round than this. I thought the smoke was gonna be the way it smelled, but to my surprise it was a soapy like smooth smoke that had a uniq ue odor without tongue bite. No burn issues at all with minimal relights. Salty leather about sums it up. Left a little oily residue on my fingers. Its almost nothing except latakia. It is just relatively strong when compared to most lat blends. So, as an amateur pipe smoker, I have discovered with the help of this blend (and a few others) that I am apparently a Latakia-phile. 60 (PK)/40 (Savinilli English) makes a great all day smoke but PK can certainly stand alone. I've been smoking english blends since the mid 90's. I really enjoy Latakia, dont get me wrong, but holy cow this was a bit strong for my taste. Fully recommended, but is only for people that fully enjoy Latakia and not for pipe begginers. I had expected a lat bomb out of this from all that I have heard about it. After rubbing a chunk of this smoky ambrosia out it looks like I repair diesel trucks for a living. Perhaps this is why pirates didn't have wives on their ships with them. The impressive thing about this blend is that it has such a massive amount of latakia but somehow remains interesting and easy to smoke. This is probablly one of the smoothest blends despite it's overall strength there is. Disclosure: I was given a free sample of this from smokingpipes.com and I prefer aromatics. This comes in a Krumble Kake and was fun to break and crumble to prepare for the bowl. I'll stick with more basic English/Balkan blends that use Latakia as a secondary player; not the only player. Yes its filled with Latakia to the brim, but as mentioned by blenders before, Latakia has this kind of event horizon, where if you use enough of it, its less of a lat bomb than blends with less Latakia. I got this as a sample from smokingpipes.com, and wanted to try a crumble cake. When I first got back into smoking pipes, a local cigar shop was getting rid of the pipe products he had - apparently not enough pipes smokers in the area. A very enjoyable 3 stars with no complaints from me. Presentation is a firm cake, pitch black with a few brown flecks. HOWEVER, I just can't get past the fact that for whatever reason, Kake r eally seems to spoil at or near the half-way point; the bottom half of every bowl I smoke just simply does not have the same effect (and results) as the top half. PK dominates the weak tasting 965 but 965 does add quite a bit of oriental and nicotine which makes the combination more interesting than the components. In my opinion, Pirate Kake is missing the added character, or that little bit of something extra that's needed to elevate it to the status of other top-shelf blends in its class. For me, however, Pirate Kake is nothing short of a ridiculous, unbalanced mess. Taste like how it smells. Because of the high concentration of lat, this blend is very smooth and leathery with campfire notes galore. The Cavendish doesn't moderate this blend at all, and the Turkish is AWOL. As far as C&D's products go, Greg Pease's Quiet Nights recipe has more of that creosote/Latakia flavor up-front. This is a pretty powerful blend that has plenty of flavor as well as Vitamin N. The tin note reminds me of leather and farmland. Very consistent flavor that was much to my taste of this very uniquely wonderful blend that really is for those looking for something different. Update 06/30/18: I can attest that age does this wonders. Thick and creamy with a bit if a sweet perfume-esque flavor to it. I can't truly call it an English blend (even a Lat-Bomb English), but I like what it does. I found that rubbing it out gave me the smoke I wanted and took away some of the haggardness of the rum smell. The Krumble Kake's dark, and very easy to fluff and crumble, in fact, a large proportion has already crumbled in the pouch (I bought bulk). Some would say the latakia is over dominant so much that you can not taste the other tobaccos in this blend. A must for any latakia fan, especially at the great price it is sold in bulk (and the cake form allows you to cellar it without perceivable deterioration). After smoking this I have since went back to an easier smoking blend an d I felt cheapened by the lighter smoke. It is very monotone and I don't notice the "other" oriental varieties at all. I like to smoke upon occasion - not something I break out often but when I do I really enjoy it. Could replace G.L. The Latakia is always front and center, and to me, that is not a bad thing. With the description of a 75% Latakia blend, I expected this tobacco to be nothing but the dark leaf and put off ordering it for a long time. Coming in bulk as it does it is a good value, and based on the oil content I bet this blend would be perfect for coloring up a nice shiny new meer. I confess, any bite, which I have gotten, may come from a propensity, on my part, to "puff" this tobacco due to how much I enjoy it. It is sort of goldilocks for me right out of the tin in terms of dry time. Its a circus sideshow blend, taking its place on stage next to the Bearded Lady and Mr. Lifto (google him, kids.) To be clear, I enjoyed the smoke a lot however the latakia odor still haunts one of my pipes. It's really not what I consider a "Latakia Bomb" with an obtrusive Latakia aroma! In the past, I wasn't much of a Balkan/Latakia smoker, but this blend convinced me that I ha d been missing a lot.
